Gilt rules stamped on front & back boards, six gilt compartments on spine. "E.M.J." gilt-stamped on lower right front board of each volume. Bookplate of Evelyn Maud Johnson, Villa Vita, Kingsdown, Deal, Kent, 1919 in each volume. The set, complete as issued, consists of the following: Vol. I, the Renaissance; Vols. Pater (1839-1894) was an English essayist, art critic, and novelist who advocated a cultivation of intense receptivity to beauty and to moments of sensation in life, art, music, and literature; unlike Ruskin, he did not emphasize art as a source of moral or social edification. He was a source of what became known as the Aesthetic Movement; he was a great influence on Oscar Wilde, whom he tutored at Oxford. ; 8vo
