London & New York the London Printing & Publishing Co., Ltd. First Edition Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket  
Inv. # 070120B. Full light brown leather designed to appear 3/4 with large gold-stamped portrait of Shakespeare on front boards. All edges gilt. The work "compris[es] the principal female characters in the plays of the great poet. Engraved in the highest style of art, from drawings by eminent artists. With letterpress extracts from the text, in English and French; and critical essays on each of the characters." The book is close in looks to Inventory # P-070120A, The Complete Works of Shakspeare, and was published by the same company around the same time, mid 19th Century. It would make an excellent companion to that set, as well as being a very nice stand-alone work. ; Steel engraving; 4to 11" - 13" tall

Inv. # P-070120A. 3 volumes bound in full leather, designed to look like 3/4 leather. Gold-stamped portrait of Shakespeare on front board. Marbled endpapers and edges. "Revised from the original editions" with "a Memoir, and an essay on his genius, by Barry Cornwall." "Illustrated with engravings on wood from designs by Kenny Meadows; and numerous steel plates, portraits of eminent actors, etc., etc." The three volumes are arranged by subject, with Comedies, Tragedies, and Histories (along with the long poems and Sonnets). There is no date, but the work is mid 19th Century. The bindings are all tight, with no wear to joints; some bumping to corners. We also have "The Heroines of Shakespeare" Inv. # P-070120B), from the same publisher and similar in appearance, which would make a nice companion volume.; Steel engraving; 4to 11" - 13" tall
