Volume X of this set continues through the presidency of William Howard Taft and has the important eleventh volume, The Index to all of the previous volumes. ; 8vo; 8145 + Index pages; Beginning with Volume I, the formation of the government, and the Presidency of George Washington, through Volume X, the presidency of William Howard Taft, in 1912, the documents of each of the presidents are offered. Inv. # P-030428. 2 volumes bound in 3/4 brown leather over brown cloth boards with marbled endpapers. Six compartments on spine with gilt-stamped titles and decorations. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Hay was Lincoln's secretary during the Civil War (along with John Nicolay), and he and Nicolay edited the first important set of Lincoln's papers; they also wrote a multi-volume biography of Lincoln that in many ways is still a standard work. He later served as a diplomat in many capitals around the world and as the American Secretary of State under McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. He negotiated the deal that promised American support for Panamanians revolting from Colombia in exchange for rights to build a canal across the Isthmus of Panama. ; B&W Photographs; 8vo
