Inv. # P-030428. 2 volumes bound in 3/4 brown leather over brown cloth boards with marbled endpapers. Six compartments on spine with gilt-stamped titles and decorations. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Hay was Lincoln's secretary during the Civil War (along with John Nicolay), and he and Nicolay edited the first important set of Lincoln's papers; they also wrote a multi-volume biography of Lincoln that in many ways is still a standard work. He later served as a diplomat in many capitals around the world and as the American Secretary of State under McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. He negotiated the deal that promised American support for Panamanians revolting from Colombia in exchange for rights to build a canal across the Isthmus of Panama. ; B&W Photographs; 8vo
