Hay was Lincoln's secretary during the Civil War (along with John Nicolay), and he and Nicolay edited the first important set of Lincoln's papers; they also wrote a multi-volume biography of Lincoln that in many ways is still a standard work. He later served as a diplomat in many capitals around the world and as the American Secretary of State under McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.
